چکیده

Experimental evidence of mode-selective evanescent power coupling at telecommunication frequencies with efficiencies up to 75% from a tapered optical fiber to a metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide is presented. The waveguide consists of a two-dimensional square lattice of lithographically defined Au nanoparticles on an optically thin silicon membrane. The dispersion and attenuation properties of the waveguide are analyzed using the fiber taper. The high efficiency of power transfer into these waveguides solves the coupling problem between conventional optics and plasmonic devices and could lead to the development of highly efficient plasmonic sensors and optical switches. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1862340g

PlasmonicsÐA Route to Nanoscale Optical Devices

In recent years, there has been tremendous progress in the miniaturization of optical devices. Planar waveguides and photonic crystals are currently key technologies enabling a revolution in integrated optical components. The size and density of optical devices employing these technologies is nonetheless limited by the diffraction limit of light, which imposes a lower size limit on the guided l...

Local detection of electromagnetic energy transport below the diffraction limit in metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguides.

Achieving control of light-material interactions for photonic device applications at nanoscale dimensions will require structures that guide electromagnetic energy with a lateral mode confinement below the diffraction limit of light. This cannot be achieved by using conventional waveguides or photonic crystals. It has been suggested that electromagnetic energy can be guided below the diffractio...

Guiding of Electromagnetic Energy in Subwavelength Periodic Metal Structures

The miniaturization of optical devices to spatial dimensions akin to their electronic device counterparts requires structures that guide electromagnetic energy with a lateral confinement below the diffraction limit of light. This cannot be achieved using conventional optical waveguides or photonic crystal defect waveguides. Thus, a size mismatch between electronic and optical integrated devices...

Plasmon guided modes in nanoparticle metamaterials.

Surface modes in nanostructured metallic metamaterial films are reported showing larger confinement than plasmons in metallic waveguides of similar dimensions, but in contrast to plasmons, the new modes have TE polarization. The metamaterial, formed by planar arrays of nearly-touching metallic nanoparticles, behaves as a high-index dielectric for the noted polarization, thus yielding well confi...
